If you are not really into exercising, but are looking for a way to get into shape, you may want to ease yourself into exercising by walking. This is a great way to burn calories and fat, lose weight, and improve your muscle tone and all-round health. For those of you who do not exercise regularly, you should start out slowly, and just take short leisurely walks at first, adding more and more distance each week.
When you are just starting out, you should only take about three walks each week, for about 15 minutes to a time, less if you are really out of shape. This way, you will avoid a lot of muscle strain, as well as a lot of aches and pains, because you are not pushing yourself too hard. Each week, add a few minutes to your walk, until you can easily walk for an hour or more without feeling tired, sore or winded.
You Can Walk Just About Anywhere
Unlike other exercises that require you to work out at a gym or health club, you can walk pretty much anywhere. Instead of driving to work, if it is close enough to your home, try walking instead. If you usually take the elevator, use the stairs. A lot of people even get together and mall-walk (walk many laps through a local shopping mall). You don’t need special equipment, and you can find space all over, so walking is an ideal way to get in shape without being a pain.
Make Sure You Have the Proper Footwear
If you are going to be doing any amount of walking, it is important that you have the proper footwear. You really should have a good quality pair of walking shoes, not runners or other types of athletic shoes. If you are unsure of what to buy, ask a consultant to help you get the best shoes for walking.
An Activity for the Entire Family
When you take walks for exercise, you can take the whole family along and make it an outing. Little ones love to run and play, so they will not even realize that they are doing something that is good for their health. And, it is a great way to talk with your loved ones about the day’s events. So, get the family together, and go for a walk tonight. You will be taking the first steps toward total health for you and your family.
