Healthy Split Pea and Ham Soup

This soup is pretty easy to make.  I choose to make it in two stages.   You can also easily turn this into a Vegetarian Soup.

The Peas:

I parboiled the peas for 30 minutes.  This is a optional step, but I wanted my soup to be extra smooth.

  • 3 cups dried peas
  • 6 cups of water
  • 2 dried bay leaves
  • 1/4 tsp dried thyme
  • 2 cloves garlic

Drain, set aside for later or store in a closed container for up to 4 days in the fridge.

How I did it:

Step 1 – Parboiled the Peas, set aside

Step 2 – Melt the butter

Step 3 – “Sweat” the onions, celery, garlic

Step 4 – add ham, peas, stock

Step 5 – Simmer for 90 minutes

Step 6 – Take Ham Hock out and de-bone

Step 7 – Blend peas soup into the texture you want

Step 8 – Add the ham back  and garish with parsley and fresh ground pepper.

The Ingredients:

  • 3 c dried peas (this is about 4 cups if you parboiled them)
  • 1 tbsp real butter (not margarine )
  • 1 smoked ham hock
  • 2 c diced ham
  • 4 c vegetable  stock
  • 4 c water (you can use all water if you prefer)
  • 1/2 c diced onions
  • 1/2 c diced celery
  • 2 diced cloves garlic
  • 1 c carrots
  • 2 c ham
  • 2  dried bay leaves
  • 1/2 dried thyme


  • Vegetarian version – skip the meat 🙂
  • You could also use smoked bacon for flavor if you do not have a ham hock
  • Left-over roasted bone-in ham – yummy
  • Stock – homemade  if you have it, low sodium if you buy it especially if you are adding the ham hock
  • You can also use chicken stock if you prefer
