In a Twinkie World

berries

Reminiscing about the good old days, my friend wrote saying:

I remember as a kid when we discovered “bakers” bread which seemed so heavenly compared to the home made bread mom worked so hard to make, particularly the whole wheat bread. It was so soft and light and all those yummy things kids go for.  I remember mom struggling with her disappointment in our preference for this stuff. I remember one time when there was a big family funeral and all the relatives were arriving at our home one evening just as mother was taking a batch of bread out of the oven and how they all just devoured it.  Made me really wonder??  Did they not have all the Wonder Bread they wanted already? What was their enthrallment with home made bread – of course other than it was just hot out of the oven and slathered with butter?

These were the days when it would not occur to me that food companies and producers would put anything harmful into their products.  This naivete extended to our spraying DDT and Roundup products on our gardens and fields.  Gotta’ get rid of those bugs!!!

Then in high school my brother got a summer job working at Pete’s bakery where all this Wonder Bread and Twinkies and Hostess pies and cupcakes were made.  They would let him bring home all the day old (weeks really) stuff that was returned to the bakery by the route drivers. He would bring it home by the pickup load and we would feed it to the bunch of pigs we were raising.  They gobbled it up like crazy. But when the pigs started having their litters, most of the babies were still born or sickly. What a shock! We quickly changed their diet back to regular pig feed. Made me really think about that whole thing of what we were eating ourselves.

Mom was a great cook and of course we lived on a farm and had our own garden so that was great.  But I don’t remember much talk or awareness then about nutrition per se, chemical additives, preservatives, sugar etc.  I remember mom pounding out steaks with meat tenderizer which was really just MSG.  And she suffered badly from migraines which would knock her out for several days.  No doubt she was unknowingly inflicting many of these headaches on herself. I’ve since learned what MSG is and can do and the many other names it’s called by.

This is to say nothing of our naive perception of the Doctors who certainly would never do any harm and all the wonderful modern drugs they had. It was a different world back then.  But some still live in it today.

Another friend, who eats consciously herself, wrote of her family members’ health. They have major breathing issues, severe allergies, heart attacks, diabetes, one now in a wheelchair and another having had recent exploratory surgery.

While visiting her family home, their breakfast consisted of bagels and cream cheese, yogurt with fruit at the bottom, Twinkies, ding dongs and coffee with flavored creamers. Can Twinkies, Highly processed wheat and products with High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) really be called food?

In-between cigarettes, yes, even with breathing difficulties, they brought out their giant plastic bags of medications they each take!  No wonder they’re ill. She said it was like being in some surreal movie.

As new healing modalities resurface on this planet, we can take a more and more active role in our own healing. Health begins by choosing what we put into our bodies. Just remove or add one thing now and then until it becomes a part of your routine. There are many websites to educate yourself.

Add a superfood like Goji Berries or spirulina. Switch from sugared yogurts to plain whole yogurt and add your own fruit or even honey if you want it sweeter. Switch from High Fructose Corn Syrup drinks to organic juices or try coconut water without additives. Better yet, remove any so called food with HFCS in it. Read up on what it does to your body. You’ll be shocked.

Begin reading food labels. Learn what you’re putting into your bodies and make new habits. Try making soups and meals from scratch at least once a week. Use whole foods: fresh organic tomatoes instead of canned and fresh spinach or greens. They taste incredible and aren’t full of toxins. You’ll be really glad you did.

Life is all about choice. Choose consciously what to put into your body next time you eat.
