Survival Foods

If you’re putting an emergency preparation kit together, there are a few necessary items that you need to have on hand. Survival foods are very important, since you never know how long you and your family will have to live off of the supplies in the kit. Here are some foods you make sure that you pack, as well as other things that you won’t want to forget.

Survival foods are those that will last for long periods of time. So, be sure to pick up a number of canned foods from the grocery store to keep in your kit in case you need them. Fruits, vegetables, beans, and some meats will keep in cans for a while, but it’s still a good idea to change out the cans every few months if you haven’t used them yet.

You should also make sure that you have a number of packaged survival foods in your kit. These foods have a number of preservatives in them, so they’ll stay fresh if there’s an emergency and you’re not able to cook fresh food. Snacks like granola bars and dry cereal are ideal for an emergency preparation kit, and you may also want to pack packaged fruit snacks since they contain the vitamin C that your children need.

Don’t forget that you also need to include water in your survival foods kit. You and your family should have a few days’ supply of water, so that you can be sustained until you are able to be rescued. There should be enough water in the kit for hygiene and bathing purposes as well, and if your family member(s) have special health concerns such as diabetes, more water should be packed in case blood sugar spikes up or drops.

In addition to having the right amounts of food and water in your kit, you should also include some first aid supplies in your container of survival foods. Bandages of all sizes should be packed in the kit, so that you can dress wounds if necessary. Some type of antibacterial solution is also necessary, so that you can reduce the risk of infection. A bottle of hydrogen peroxide is ideal (you can buy it for less than $2 at the grocery store), and purchasing some small bottles of hand sanitizer will help as well.

If you want to get more recommendations for survival foods that need to be included in your kit, you can visit the American Red Cross website for helpful tips. There are also a number of suggestions on www.kidshealth.org that will help you to teach your children about how to be prepared for a natural disaster.
