WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org — What’s the Difference?

I have been asked many times,  what’s the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org?  It is definitely a point of confusion.   This is what WordPress says:

WordPress.com is a hosting platform that makes it easy for anyone to publish online. WordPress.com is brought to you by some of the same folks who work on WordPress, the open source blogging software that powers millions of websites.

WordPress is free blogging software. With WordPress, you can install themes and plugins, run advertisements, edit the database and even modify the PHP code that powers your site.

WordPress.org is the website where the free WordPress software can be downloaded. Source

Let’s break it down

What is the goal for your website?   Nice personal blog to keep in touch with your family and friends?  or a Small business blog to keep in touch with your customers?

Now that you have that in mind here is the how it breaks down.

  • WordPress.org is where you would download the latest version of the WordPress software.
  • WordPress.com is where you can host your own free blog.

Back to your goals, if you are looking for personal blog, then definitely go with the free WordPress.com.

On the other hand if you are a small business, then I would highly recommend WordPress.org.

Slow your Roll

I bet right about now you are freakin out!  And no doubt you are thinking to yourself ” how the heck do I download and install WordPress?”   Thankfully you don’t have to know.  95% of the web hosting companies out there will have a “quick install, ” you can do this through the control panel or cpanel. It can be as easy as a click of the button.

Managed Web Hosting

The option that I like the most, the one I use and the one that I recommend is “Managed Web Hosting“, what this means, your web hosting company does it all for you.  The Web Hosting Company will keep the WordPress software up to date for sure, some will even have a set of plugins and themes they will also manage.

If you have already created a WordPress.com site or maybe you you are unhappy with your current host, don’t fret!  It is very easy to migrate to a self-hosted/managed hosting platform at any time.

It is not hard and web hosts have awesome customer service to help you with all your needs.

  1. I remember… it seems like years ago, when I too was confused and didn’t even realize there was a difference between .com and .org.

I’ll +1 Managed Web Hosting. Makes things much easier. I wish I’d started out with managed hosting, instead of having to switch after I realized what a pain most hosting companies can be.
